At Coastwood Furniture, we believe good business goes beyond creating beautiful, high-quality furniture. It’s about making a positive impact on the people, communities, and environment around us. We take our social responsibility seriously and are proud of the efforts we make to build a sustainable, ethical, and inclusive business. Here’s how we’re contributing to a better future:
Sustainable Practices and Eco-Friendly Materials
We’re passionate about protecting the environment, and that’s reflected in how we source and create our furniture. All the timber used in our NZ Made products are FSC certified, meaning it comes from responsibly managed forests that protect biodiversity and support sustainable forest management. The majority of our imported products also use FSC certified timber, and we are working closely with our suppliers to ensure any new products hold this certification. The finishes we use are from Mirotone, a leader in environmentally responsible coatings. As outlined in TECHNICAL BULLETIN NZ-009 Coastwood is committed to using finishes that are suitable to be applied to children’s toys and nursery furniture – keeping the next generation safe!
To reduce waste, we make a conscious effort to recycle wherever possible. Timber offcuts are bagged and sold as firewood, while dust and waste solvents are carefully collected. Dust is captured through our state-of-the-art dust extraction system, ensuring the safety and health of our workers, and is donated to a local plywood factory for use in their furnace. All waste solvents are sent to a recycling facility, and cardboard is recycled at the local centre, reducing landfill waste and supporting a circular economy.
Giving Back to the Community
Coastwood Furniture actively supports charitable causes that give back to the community. We’re committed to helping those in need, both locally and beyond. Through donations and volunteering, we’ve partnered with several organisations to make a meaningful difference. You can learn more about our charitable contributions and how we’re giving back on our Charitable Giving page.
Caring for Our People
At Coastwood, we’re committed to creating a workplace that is fair, inclusive, and respectful of all individuals. We embrace diversity in our workforce, which includes team members from multiple ethnic backgrounds and both male and female staff. Supporting migrants has been a meaningful part of our efforts, having helped them settle into their new homes and navigate the process of becoming New Zealand citizens.
We believe that when our people thrive, our business thrives. We treat every team member with respect and expect the same in return. Our culture is built on integrity, collaboration, and a shared vision for success.
Supporting Local Communities
As a proud New Zealand-based company, we are committed to supporting local businesses and communities. The majority of our pine timber is sourced from Westimber and Westco Lagan, local mills that allow us to contribute to the local economy and support New Zealand’s forestry industry. By sourcing locally, we’re not only ensuring the highest quality materials, but we’re also reducing the carbon footprint associated with transporting goods over long distances.
Durable, Long-Lasting Products
We believe in the long-term value of well-made furniture. Our NZ made products are built to last and carry a 25-year warranty, giving you peace of mind that your investment is durable and sustainable. Unlike “fast furniture” which often ends up in landfills within a few years, our locally crafted pieces are designed for longevity and quality. Learn more about the environmental impact of fast furniture and why buying New Zealand-made is a better choice for the planet in our blog: The Environmental Impact of Fast Furniture.
Why Social Responsibility Matters to Us
At Coastwood Furniture, we understand that our actions today shape the world we live in tomorrow. From sourcing sustainable materials and creating local jobs, to supporting our community and reducing waste, we’re proud of the positive impact we’re making. As we continue to grow, we remain committed to doing our part in building a better, more sustainable future for all.
