There’s something so satisfying about a project that completely transforms a space without blowing the budget—and this one does just that!

As furniture manufacturers, we’re passionate about all things interior design—and we absolutely love a good DIY project! Transforming a space with simple, stylish updates is something we truly enjoy, and we believe that the right touches can make all the difference. This easy half-wall panelled shelf is a perfect example of how small changes can completely elevate a plain room. The best part? It’s simple, affordable, and versatile enough to work with all kinds of furniture and colours.

Here’s how we brought this stylish transformation to life!

Step 1: Prepare the Space

Start by clearing the area, patching any wall damage, and giving the surface a good sand. A clean, smooth surface is key to making the whole project go smoothly.

Step 2: Build the Frame

Next, construct a simple timber frame right on the wall using standard framing timber. This creates a strong base for attaching the panel and creates the shelf on top, which is a great spot for decor.

Step 3: Add the Panels

Instead of cutting individual slats, in this project we used grooved MDF sheet that mimics the look of vertical panelling. It’s a quick and easy way to get that sleek, coastal look. Just cut the sheet to fit your frame and attach it with adhesive and nails.

Step 4: Play with Colour

Next comes the fun part—paint testing! We tried a few options using Resene testpots and were especially drawn to Resene Lemongrass—a warm, muted green that looked beautiful on the panel wall.

But after stepping back and imagining the room fully styled, we decided to paint the entire room, including the panel wall, in a fresh white for a more versatile and timeless finish. This opened up styling options and made the room feel more spacious.

The Finishing Touches

We completed the room with a simple Coastwood Single Base Frame and Plyhome 1 Drawer Bedside Table. These pieces fit perfectly with the new wall and gave the room a soft, Coastal-inspired vibe.

The Result?

A clean, classic feature wall that’s both practical and beautiful—and all done on a budget.
