Talking about bed and mattress sizes can be confusing, as the words are often used interchangeably but are not always exactly the same. Beds in New Zealand come in six standard sizes based on mattress dimensions: single, king single, double, queen, king and super king, There are also less common sizes like the Californian king, long single, and long double.

In this article, we’ll refer to bed sizes, but keep in mind that the actual dimensions shown are generally for the mattress. The bed frame itself is usually slightly larger, with ends or sides that stick out a little. When measuring your room, consider this extra space.

How to Choose the Right Bed Size

When deciding on a bed size, consider:

  • Age – Is it for a child, single adult, or couple?

  • Body size – Taller individuals may need extra length.

  • Number of sleepers – How many people will sleep in the bed?

  • Budget – Larger beds usually cost more.

  • Room space – Will there be enough room for walking and other furniture?

Single, king single and double beds are usually best for children or single adults. Queen to Californian king sizes are best suited for couples.

Will My Mattress Fit a Coastwood Bed Frame?

Many people ask if their existing mattress will fit a Coastwood bed frame. All our bed frames are built to suit standard New Zealand mattress sizes, so a standard single, king single, double, queen, king, or super king mattress will fit the corresponding Coastwood bed frame.

Bed frames are usually slightly larger than the mattress, so there may be a small gap around the edges, this is normal and allows the mattress to sit comfortably. If your mattress is non-standard or imported, it’s a good idea to double-check the dimensions before ordering.

Note: Mattress sizes can vary slightly between manufacturers. A difference of a few centimetres is usually fine, as Coastwood bed frames are designed with a little extra room around the edges.

Standard Bed Sizes

The dimensions shown below are the general standard for bed mattresses but be aware that these may vary slightly between manufacturers.

Single

The single is the smallest bed size available in New Zealand, perfect for younger children who have outgrown a cot.

King Single

A king single is a great upgrade for older children who need extra space. It can also work well in a guest room for single visitors.

Double

While the double was traditionally used by couples, it’s now not really considered big enough to comfortably fit two adults. It’s best suited for older children or single adults who don’t require extra length.

Queen

Queen beds have replaced doubles as the most popular choice for couples. They fit two adults comfortably and are now generally regarded as the minimum size for two people.

King

A king bed offers extra space for couples and is becoming increasingly popular for those who want more room to move. It can also suit people who tend to have children or pets in their bed.

Super King

The super king provides additional space and comfort, making it a great choice for bigger couples or those who want a more luxurious option.

Less Common Bed Sizes

Most Coastwood bed frames can also be custom-made in long single, long double, or Californian king sizes.

  • Long Single (91cm x 203cm) – Same width as a single, but as long as a king single. Ideal for tall children in narrow rooms.

  • Long Double (137cm x 203cm) – Perfect for taller single adults who want extra stretch space but cannot fit a queen bed.

  • Californian King (203cm x 203cm) – The largest bed in New Zealand, as wide as it is long. Offers maximum comfort and makes a bold statement in a large bedroom.

Hopefully after reading this, you will be able to decide which size bed best suits your needs. When making a final decision, be sure to consider the room that it is going in. Will there be enough space to walk around the bed? Can you fit in other bedroom furniture?

Coastwood Furniture has many different beds in all the sizes so once you’ve decided on your size, take a look at our NZ made bed frame options or our range of mattresses.
